Ministry Hardcore Café

The Ministry Hardcore Café, in Pigalle, is an unusual mix of lively people, a gothic theme ambiance, the steady thump of heavy metal music and truly exotic brews.

Although a relatively small and intimate bar, the visual decor is mind-blowing. You enter a macabre dungeon - complete with corpses and giant skulls - and either hang out at the often-crowded long bar or wander into the cemetery "picnic" area.

The beer selection, too, is mind-blowing - everything from fruit, rum and chilli-flavored brews from Europe, Mexico and Israel to standard French, Belgium and Canadian brands. Fresh, crispy "paninis" - the French equivalent of American "subs" - are a tasty accompaniment.

The bar - in sight of the Moulin Rouge - is run by its Franco-American owner, Ariane Canicio, who opened it just after her 20th birthday last year. The staff is young, happy and willing to please, and give the establishment a decidedly international flavor.

A real treat are the many "theme" nights - whether celebrating the full moon, convening tattoo artists, body piercers and fortune tellers, or throwing the biggest Halloween party in Paris!

Finally, Ministry's reputation as "the" place for heavy metal has made it the stomping ground for the many hardcore bands passing through Paris. On any evening, you may come across the likes of Iron Maiden, Faith No More or Anthrax just after their gigs in one of the nearby concert venues. And a new twist: weekly impromptu bashes with well-known metal artists. Have fun!
